Born in Milan in 1931 and graduated in 1959. Architect, artist, designer and design manager, theorist and journalist, he began his profession in the studio Nizzoli. In 1970 he abandoned architectural design to devote himself to architecture and design journalism: he directed Casabella, Modo and Domus, through which his requests for renewal of the project world differ. With Branzi and Sottsass and with the participation in Global Tools and Radical Design he is the main theorist and promoter of the renewal of Italian design of the 80s. In the late ’70s he returned to the desire to design and design, and in 1979 he joined the Studio Alchimia, the radical design group that in the 80s together with Memphis has upset the functionalist design aiming at creating objects for pure artistic pleasure , with references to popular culture and kitsch, outside of industrial production and their practical utility. With alchima he creates objects, furniture, environments, paintings, installations and architecture. Among the most significant works of this period are the Museum of Gratuaggi and the reinvention of the image of Alessi, of which he is a metaprojective consultant. In 1989 he opened the Atelier Mendini in Milan with his brother Francesco, in which he continued a sophisticated and pop designer activity that, starting from a literary text matrix and developing into a skilful intertwining of art and design, sometimes emerged into pop objects of great commercial success.
