Gae Aulenti, pseudonym of Gaetana Aulenti (Palazzolo dello Stella, December 4, 1927 – Milan, October 31, 2012), was an Italian designer and architect, particularly dedicated to the theme of architectural set-up and restoration.
She graduated in architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in 1953, where she also obtained the qualification to the profession. Gae Aulenti trained as an architect in Milan in the fifties, where Italian architecture is engaged in that historical cultural research of recovery of the architectural values of the past and of the built-existing environment that will flow into the Neoliberty movement.
From 1955 to 1965 she was part of the editorial staff of Casabella-after the direction of Ernesto Nathan Rogers. In 1965 she design the famous Pipistrello table lamp, designed as a site specific for the Olivetti showroom that she realizes at the same time in Paris.
In 1972 she took part in the famous Italian exhibition at MOMA: the new Domestic Landscape organized by Emilio Ambasz many others emerging designers and architects, including Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper, Joe Colombo, Ettore Sottsass, Gaetano Pesce, Archizoom, Superstudio, Gruppo Strum and Group 9999.
She died on October 31st 2012 in Milan at the age of 84, before her death, on October 16th she was awarded for her career by the Triennale.
She is considered one of the most influential Italian architects both in architecture and in design.
